Lee Mumford

Silverstone 14 May 2006

Lee had a cracking weekend at Silverstone having qualified 2nd on Sunday morning.  The first race got off to a good start with Lee chasing the leader who has several more years racing experience than Lee.  The leader was put under considerable pressure from Lee, a driver desperate to get his season back on track following the disappointment of Snetterton recently where he qualified on pole, only for electrical problems to strike before the start of the race.  Lee tried to make several passes at Becketts and Luffield but neither worked as gradually Lee’s tyres went off.

The second race was much the same as the first, with Lee starting from 2nd on the grid and following the leader all the way to the chequered flag.

Let’s hope Lee makes it to the top step at the next race on 28 May at Mallory Park – good luck Lee!

Karl Haxton – Rotax Max

Karl and his team had a cracking weekend at the Brazilian Cup held at Whilton Mill recently winning 3 Rotax classes.

Karl has already had three consecutive wins at Shenington giving him the maximum points overall and the winner of the Winter Championship.

Karl was on the front row of the grid for the final at the Rotax shakedown but unfortunately a red flag destroyed his race.

Mike Comber – TKM Intermediates

New to the team of ‘Speedwell drivers’ nobody was ever going to stop Michael Comber winning the Formula Junior Intermediate TKM.

The 15 year-old Thrussington driver dominated the field by winning all three heats and then on to the top step of the podium in the final.

Must be his Speedwell SP2’s – we have always said they make you driver faster!  Well done Mike!

Lee tests Reynard 89FF 1600 at Donington
9th February 2006

Former BRDC Single Seater driver Lee Mumford was seen testing the winning Reynard 89FF that lead Joey Foster to 3 consecutive wins at the Walter Hayes Trophy Race in 2003, 2004 and again in 2005. It was the first time Lee had driven the FF1600 car and impressed both Marque Car Racing Team boss Don Hardman and his Manager, FIA GT driver, Neil Cunningham.

This was Lee’s first test of the year and he settled into the car immediately and clocked some very fast laps exceeding expectations from both Don and Neil. “We are very excited to have Lee racing with the team this year” said Don, “we were very impressed with the lad, he has never driven the car before and certainly exceeded all expectations, he was very fast and seemed totally at ease with the car”.

Lee said “the car may not be the newest car around, but I love driving it. It is very responsive and I feel it suits my style of driving. I’m really looking forward to entering the FF1600 M&S Championship this year and am pleased to be working with Don and his team; they have maintained this car for several years and really know the car inside out. I am confident of a good result and can’t wait to get started”.

Neil Cunningham added “I am really pleased with the results today, I’m sure Lee will not only enjoy this years racing but can look forward to some good results, he has a natural ability and is very dedicated to his racing both on and off the track”.

Cunningham 'over the moon' with Balfe deal.

6th February 2006

Neil Cunningham has admitted he is 'over the moon' with the news that he will be joining the Balfe Motorsport team for the 2006 FIA GT Championship season.

Cunningham will line-up alongside Shaun Balfe and Jamie Derbyshire in the Balfe Motorsport's Saleen S7R following the news that Embassy Racing - the team he has driven for the past two seasons - will sit out 2006.

The move will see Cunningham add the Saleen to the already lengthy list of cars he has driven during his career, and he said he felt confident that the Saleen would be successful on track during the coming year."I'm over the moon!" he said. "A drive in a proper GT1 car in international competition is something I've been working for throughout my career and I can't wait to get behind the wheel of the car. Jonathan [France] and his team have decided to take a sabbatical this season and he has been incredibly helpful in backing me to go with the Balfe squad.

"I know that David and the rest of the Balfe team always turn out a damn good race car. With the work they're already doing and the driver line-up we've got I'm sure we can pick up some really competitive results through the year.

"I'm certainly happy to be driving with Shaun and Jamie. I've known them both for long time and we should push each other from round to round which will be great for us and the rest of the team. I'll also need to work out how many GT cars I'll have driven again once I've tested the Saleen, I think I'm up into the 20's somewhere now!"

Cunningham’s move will see him will restart a relationship with David Balfe that stretches back to the early 1990's when Balfe ran Cunningham in Formula Ford.

"I've always been respectful of Neil's persistence throughout his career," he said. "I know how professional he is and his determination and speed will be a great asset to us as we go up against the rest of the GT1 field. Shaun and Jamie already work well together and with the team and Neil should fit straight into that relationship."

Michael Moyers
“Michael eyes BARC Formula Renault”

Michael seen here wearing his SPEEDWELL’s is hoping to drive Formula Renault in 2006!

On Thursday the BRDC Single-Seater double race winner Michael Moyers visited Donington Park for the first time since 2004 as he continued his winter testing. He completed a half day test with race winning team Falcon Motorsport in their Formula Renault car, impressing team principal Nick Streadfield.

“ I was delighted to get Michael out in one of our Formula Renaults and given the short amount of track time, I was very impressed with his professional approach and rapid progress to a competitive time.”

Having driven a Formula Renault on one previous occasion Michael felt at home in the car but the freezing temperatures made the car feel unstable to begin with, but after a short period he had a fresher set of tyres on the car which made a huge difference and he was soon able to hustle the car and set fast lap times.
Michael said,

“I really enjoyed today and I learnt a great deal, even though I felt I could have gone a lot faster with a bit more track time. One of the aspects I wanted to learn was feeling the grip from the aerodynamics and going flat out down Craner Curves at 130mph certainly made me realise the benefits of the downforce!

I’d like to say a big thank you to Falcon Motorsport, they were extremely helpful and their attention to detail enabled me to learn very quickly. Providing we can find the necessary budget, I’d very much like to work with them again”

Michael is still talking with some Formula BMW teams but now sees the BARC Formula Renault Championship as a great stepping-stone as it is going to be extremely competitive and is great value for money. The budget required is in the region of £40 000, so hopefully if the funds become available we will see this talented driver on the grid again in 2006!

Neil Cunningham tests Speedwells at D1 Drifting UK

Neil Cunningham, British GT Driver, recently had a stint at the D1 Drifting in the UK. “It was fantastic” said Neil, “you really need a lot of car control as well as pedal sensitivity and thanks to Speedwell I had no problems with my new SP2’s”.

We will be seeing a lot of Neil in 2006 as he will ‘drifting’ throughout the UK at the newly launched UK D1Professional Drift Grand Prix Series as well as racing with his British GT Team, Embassy Racing.

Lee Mumford former BRDC Single Seater Driver, has been helping Speedwell develop the new Speedwell Racing inspired footwear range throughout 2005.

Lee Mumford wins both Zetec races at the
Walter Hayes Meeting

Lee has worn a new pair of Speedwells for every race throughout the year and both Lee and Speedwell knew the design was right when Lee finished the year with a double win at the Walter Hayes Trophy Meeting at Silverstone in November. “I love my Speedwells” said Lee, “they have more structure than most racing shoes and I find them extremely comfortable both in the car and walking around the pits”.

Terry Grant, Stunt Driver tests Speedwells at MPH Show

Terry Grant, famous for his driving stunts, had a fantastic time at the recent MPH Shows held at the NEC Birmingham and Earls Court London recently. “It was a great show, although very tiring” said Terry “it was the first time I had worn a pair of Speedwells and I must say how comfortable they were – usually after a couple of hours my feet ache and I have to change my footwear but I was so impressed with my new Speedwells, I actually stayed in them for the full two days!”.

Terry told Speedwell that not only was the shoe well manufactured, the shoe held more structure that any other shoe he had worn which made all the difference for long term wear. Terry was so impressed with his new Speedwells that he actually changed into a new pair of SP3’s for his long drive home!
